Founded in Montreal in 2008 by third-generation garment maker Brandon Svarc, Naked & Famous operates on a radical business model: no advertising budgets, no celebrity endorsements, and no chemical wash treatments. Instead of funneling money into high-fashion marketing campaigns, the brand pours its entire capital directly into the fabric itself.

The Recipe: Okayama Heritage & Montreal Bench Craft

Every single pair of Naked & Famous selvedge jeans represents a purist partnership between two legendary garment cultures:

Shuttle-Loomed in Okayama, Japan: The denim is woven exclusively in the historic textile capital of Kojima, Okayama. Running on low-tension, mid-century Toyoda shuttle looms, the weaving process produces authentic character, natural slub, and a clean self-finished selvedge edge that modern high-speed looms cannot replicate.

Indigo Rope-Dyeing: Yarns undergo multi-dip rope-dyeing, coating the exterior of the cotton fibers in rich indigo while keeping the core pure white. As the stiff fabric creases and abrades, the dye chips away to deliver razor-sharp honeycombs, whiskers, and high-contrast fades.

Built in Canada: Once exported from Japan, the rolls of narrow selvedge are hand-cut and bench-sewn in Quebec using vintage Union Special chainstitch machines, solid copper washer-and-burr rivets, and thick, vegetable-tanned bovine leather patches.

Left Hand Twill (LHT) 13.75oz: The ultimate gateway selvedge. Milled in a reversed S-twist weave, LHT starts crisp and rigid but breaks in rapidly into a remarkably soft, flannel-like hand-feel. Expect striking vertical fading streaks (tate-ochi) as the indigo ages.

Dirty Fade Selvedge 14.5oz: Engineered for authentic workwear character. Okayama dyers dip the cotton in a dusty beige-brown sulphur bath before applying indigo rope coats. As high-friction points wear down, the jeans expose warm, antique-brown undertones rather than white.
